Cookie Policy
Last updated: 6 August 2026
Effective date: 6 August 2026
This page lists the cookies and similar technologies this site uses, what each category does, and how to change your mind.
It is the detailed companion to the Cookies section of our Privacy Policy.
How to change your choice
Use the Cookie Preferences link in the footer at any time. You can also clear cookies in your browser settings, which will reset your choice and cause the banner to appear again.
Category 1 - Strictly necessary
Always active. These make the site work and cannot be switched off. They store your cookie choice, keep the site secure, and allow pages and forms to load correctly. They do not track you across sites and are not used for advertising.
| Name or type | Set by | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| hos_consent | HOS (first party, stored in your browser) | Remembers your cookie choices so you are not asked on every visit | 12 months |
| Hosting and delivery cookies | Our hosting provider | Routes requests, protects against abuse, and serves the correct version of the site | Session to 12 months |
Category 2 - Analytics
Off until you allow them, and off by default in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland. These help us understand which work is read and where people lose interest, in aggregate. Controls the Consent Mode signal analytics_storage.
| Name or type | Set by | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| _ga | Google Analytics 4 | Distinguishes one browser from another so visits can be counted without identifying you | 13 months |
| _ga_MHCT0NMEL2 | Google Analytics 4 | Maintains analytics session state for this specific property | 13 months |
Category 3 - Advertising
Off until you allow them, and off by default in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland. These let us measure whether a Google advertisement led to someone actually engaging with the work. Controls the Consent Mode signals ad_storage, ad_user_data, and ad_personalization.
| Name or type | Set by | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| _gcl_au | Google (Conversion Linker, first party) | Stores the advertising click identifier so a later action can be attributed to the correct campaign | 90 days |
| Google advertising cookies on doubleclick.net and google.com | Google Ads | Conversion measurement and, where you allow it, advertising personalisation | Up to 24 months |
When advertising cookies are refused, we additionally instruct Google to redact advertising identifiers and to pass the click identifier through the URL instead of storing it, so that measurement remains aggregate and cookieless.
Category 4 - Functional
Off until you allow them. We do not currently set any functional cookies. This category exists so that if we later add a genuinely optional convenience feature - a remembered reading position, a saved resource list, or a display preference - it will ask for your permission rather than assume it.
Future integrations
We will update this page before, not after, any of the following starts setting cookies: an email delivery provider for the newsletter, an embedded video player, an embedded comment or community feature, or a payment provider. Any of these would be added to the relevant category above and covered by the same banner and preferences modal. We have no plans to add social advertising pixels.
Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
There is no cross-industry standard for honouring Do Not Track, so we do not rely on it. Where your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as a refusal of advertising cookies.
