GPS, geofencing, and employee trust

Three location features are often discussed as if they were one thing. They are not.

• GPS at punch records a single location at the moment an employee clocks in or out.
• Geofencing allows or blocks a punch based on whether the employee is inside a defined area.
• Real-time GPS tracks location continuously during the shift. It sits on Advanced or costs extra as an add-on.

Location verification can reduce disputes about where and when work happened. Continuous tracking is a different proposition and can create real privacy concerns. Employers should tell staff plainly what is collected, when it is collected, and why, before switching any of it on.

Payroll and integrations

Buddy Punch supports native integrations with a number of payroll and HR providers, and its integrations page is the current source of truth for which ones and at what depth. Where a native integration does not exist, timesheets can be exported for manual import. API access is only available on Pro and above. Buddy Punch own payroll product is a separate purchase with its own pricing ($8 per user per month plus a $49 monthly base) and should be evaluated on its own terms rather than assumed to be included.

Limitations

Privacy and biometric caution

Buddy Punch offers Face ID punch-in. Employers who enable biometric features may take on obligations under state biometric privacy laws, including Illinois BIPA and the biometric statutes in Texas and Washington. This is not legal advice, facial recognition is not inherently unlawful, and no vendor can guarantee your compliance.

Practical guidance before enabling biometric clock-in: write a policy, give employees notice, obtain consent where it is required, collect the minimum data needed, and confirm how long biometric data is retained and how it is deleted. The Buddy Punch Terms of Use also include a biometric-data provision that places responsibility on the customer, so read it before switching the feature on.
