What it is

The Duex Plus DS is the lighter Duex DS panel: a 13.3-inch 1920 x 1080 LCD rated at 300 nits, measuring 12.67 x 8.85 inches and 0.25 to 0.6 inches thick, weighing 1.3 lbs. It attaches to the back of the laptop lid and slides out sideways, so the second screen travels as part of the machine rather than as separate luggage. Weight is the reason to choose this version. At 1.3 lbs it adds half a pound less to the lid than the 14.1-inch Duex Max DS, which is a real difference for anyone who opens and closes a laptop several times a day or carries it between buildings. Both panels run at the same 1920 x 1080 resolution, so the Plus DS gives you the same amount of desktop space as the Max, just at a smaller physical size and a slightly denser image. Mobile Pixels specifies USB-C or Mini HDMI, 60 Hz and about 4.5 W of draw.

Why HOS selected it

HOS lists this as the default Duex for mobile users. When the panel is heavy enough to make you leave it at home, it has stopped working, and the Plus DS is the version people keep attached.

Key features

  • 13.3-inch 1920 x 1080 LCD, 300 nits, 60 Hz (Mobile Pixels specification)
  • 1.3 lbs, 12.67 x 8.85 inches, 0.25 to 0.6 inches thick
  • Magnetically mounts to the laptop lid and slides out to the side
  • USB-C or Mini HDMI connection, roughly 4.5 W consumption
  • Half a pound lighter than the Duex Max DS

Who it is for

People on 13 to 14 inch laptops who move between locations daily and want a second screen that never feels like extra cargo.

What it will not do

At 13.3 inches, the panel sits visibly smaller than the display on a 15 or 16 inch laptop, which looks unbalanced side by side. Do not buy this model if your laptop is 15 inches or larger, if the screen mostly stays on one desk, or if you want physically larger text at the same resolution: in those cases the Duex Max DS is the better fit. It is not a colour-critical or gaming display, and it adds nothing to processing power or desk ergonomics.

Buying considerations

  • Choose this size if your laptop is 13 to 14 inches; go to the Max DS at 15 inches and above
  • Confirm your laptop supports video over USB-C, otherwise plan to use Mini HDMI
  • Same 1920 x 1080 resolution as the Max DS, so this is a size and weight decision, not a workspace one
  • Check current configuration and colour options at the merchant
