What it is

The Security Key NFC is Yubico's FIDO-only key, and its published specification is unusually clear about the boundary. Yubico lists FIDO2, FIDO CTAP 2.1 and FIDO U2F as supported, with 100 passkey slots, and lists smart card (PIV), OpenPGP, OATH-HOTP, OATH-TOTP, Yubico OTP, challenge-response and static password as not supported. For most people that boundary is invisible in daily use. Signing into Google, Microsoft, Apple, GitHub, a password manager or a bank that supports security keys uses FIDO2 or WebAuthn, and this key handles those exactly as the more expensive model does. The physical experience is the same: plug into USB-A or tap against a phone over NFC, touch the contact, done. Buy this one if your list of accounts is personal. Buy the YubiKey 5 NFC instead if a workplace, a certificate-based VPN, a code-signing workflow or an older OTP system is in your future.

Why HOS selected it

Cost is the main reason people never adopt hardware keys at all, and Yubico's own comparison makes the trade clear: you give up protocols most households never touch and keep the phishing-resistant sign-in that actually changes outcomes. HOS lists it as the sensible first key, ideally bought as a pair.

Key features

  • FIDO2, FIDO CTAP 2.1 and FIDO U2F support with 100 passkey slots (Yubico specification)
  • USB-A connector plus NFC
  • Touch-to-approve sign-in, no battery or charging
  • No smart card (PIV), OpenPGP or OTP support, which is where the price difference comes from

Who it is for

Individuals and households protecting personal email, a password manager and social or banking accounts with passkeys, who want hardware-backed sign-in at the lowest sensible cost.

What it will not do

Yubico lists no smart card (PIV), OpenPGP, OATH-TOTP, OATH-HOTP or Yubico OTP support on this key, so it cannot be used for certificate login, PGP signing or legacy OTP systems. It works only where a service offers security keys, and it does not protect an account that still permits a weaker fallback such as SMS codes.

Buying considerations

  • Confirm none of your accounts require PIV, OpenPGP or OTP before choosing this over the YubiKey 5 NFC
  • Check your important services actually list security keys as an option
  • Confirm you have USB-A ports, or that your phone NFC placement works reliably
  • Two keys, or stored recovery codes, prevent lock-out if one is lost
