Yubico YubiKey 5 NFC Security Key

What it is

The YubiKey 5 NFC is the multi-protocol key in Yubico's range. Alongside FIDO2 and WebAuthn passkeys, Yubico lists support for FIDO U2F, smart card (PIV), OpenPGP 3 and OTP on the YubiKey 5 Series. That protocol list, not the shape of the key, is the entire reason to pay more for it. Those extra protocols matter in specific situations: certificate-based login to a work laptop or VPN (PIV), signing commits or email with OpenPGP, and older one-time-password systems that some employers and legacy consoles still require. If none of those words describe your situation, the cheaper Security Key NFC covers the same passkey and WebAuthn sign-ins. This SKU uses a USB-A connector plus NFC for tapping against a supported phone. It has no battery and nothing to charge, and every sign-in needs a physical touch on the gold contact, so a stolen password alone is not enough on services that support keys.

What it will not do

Most people will never use the extra protocols, and paying for them is wasted money if all you sign into is consumer accounts. It only helps on services that support security keys, does not remove weaker fallback logins an account still allows, and recovery after losing it depends entirely on each service's own process. It is not a password manager and does not encrypt anything on your computer by itself.

Buying considerations

• Confirm your machines have USB-A, or plan for an adapter or the USB-C variant
• Check that the specific work systems needing PIV or OpenPGP accept this key
